RFC 9293 / CONTROLLING THE RATE

Congestion control

08

A receiver with plenty of space does not mean the network can carry an unlimited sending rate.

Respond to congestion signals.

The selected congestion algorithm reduces pressure when the path indicates congestion.

WHAT CHANGED
RFC 793RFC 9293 § 3.8.2

RFC 9293 adds an explicit congestion-control description based on later standards and common implementations; § 5 records this consolidation.

KEY POINT

Limit in-flight data to protect the path.

  • TCP must implement basic slow start, congestion avoidance, and exponential retransmission-timeout backoff.
  • Alternative congestion algorithms may be used when they meet applicable IETF requirements.
  • ECN should be implemented as described in RFC 3168.
DETAILS

The baseline algorithms are specified in RFC 5681 and RFC 6298. This chapter explains the control loop rather than claiming one universal window curve.
